Chapter Five

Now the big problem is trying to convince Detective Morris that I’m not a lunatic when I say a candy cane can be a murder weapon. I’ve never seen anything like this before on all the cases I’ve solved. Even I’m having a hard time digesting it, but I know it’s true. Without a doubt.

“We need to find out who sent the candy canes to Jordan Rivera,” I say, easing into it.

“Are you saying that’s the person who kidnapped him?” Mitchell asks.

“We don’t know that he was kidnapped,” Detective Morris yells, slamming the hand not holding the box against the side of his thigh.

“You’re right, Detective. In fact, I know for certain that Jordan Rivera wasn’t kidnapped.”

“Finally. Now you’re speaking logically.”

“I’m glad you think so because this next part is going to be a little harder to follow.” I meet Mitchell’s gaze. “Whoever sent those candy canes intended to murder Jordan Rivera.”

“Why send candy canes to someone you plan to kill?” Detective Morris asks.

“Because it’s probably one of the most perfect murder weapons since the victim ingests the evidence.”

Detective Morris laughs. “What, are you going to tell me Jordan Rivera was diabetic and the candy canes killed him?”

“No, but yes.” I step toward the sink and peer at the candy cane. It looks totally normal, but I’m sure it’s not. I grab a paper towel from the dispenser above the sink and use it to pick up the candy cane. Turning around, I hold it out to Detective Morris. “Detective, if you have this candy cane tested, I’m almost positive you’ll find there’s some sort of poison in it.”

“Poison? In a candy cane?” His tone implies it’s the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard, but I plow on anyway.

“That’s right. Ricky’s coworker didn’t ingest enough to kill him.” I turn the candy cane right side up in my hand. “See, not much of it melted into the hot chocolate.”

“So wait,” Mitchell says. “That’s why no one else who drank the hot chocolate got sick. It wasn’t the hot chocolate that was poisoned. It was the candy cane that melted into it.”

“Yes, and I’m guessing this is the only candy cane that was poisoned.”

“Okay, I don’t know why I’m even entertaining this possibility, but why would someone who was trying to kill”—Detective Morris pauses to roll his eyes—“Jordan Rivera, also poison the acting supervisor this weekend?”

As much as I don’t care for Detective Morris, I have to admit that’s a good question. “I’m not sure yet.”

Mitchell turns to Detective Morris. “Have that tested. Let’s find out for sure if it’s poisoned. And while you’re at it, test the candy canes Rivera received, too.”

There were two missing from the package. That could mean the killer somehow got the second one from the package and poisoned Ricky’s coworker. But how would he get into the locker to get the candy cane? And why would he need to kill anyone else? There are still so many unanswered questions.

“Fine. I’ll take this in, but mostly to prove how insane this is.
